Defamation (en hébreu : השמצה ; Hashmatsa) est un film documentaire réalisé en 2009 par le cinéaste primé Yoav Shamir. Il examine l’antisémitisme et, en particulier, la façon dont les perceptions de l’antisémitisme affectent la politique israélienne et américaine. Defamation a remporté le prix du meilleur long métrage documentaire aux Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2009.
Le film examine si l’antisémitisme est devenu un label universel pour quiconque critique Israël et la possibilité que certains Juifs se préoccupent du passé - c’est-à-dire de l’Holocauste - empêchent le progrès aujourd’hui. Shamir a décidé de réaliser Defamation après qu’un critique d’un film précédent l’ait accusé d’antisémitisme.
Le cinéaste Yoav Shamir déclare au début du film qu’en tant qu’Israélien, il n’a jamais connu l’antisémitisme lui-même et veut en savoir plus à ce sujet puisque les références à l’antisémitisme dans les pays du monde entier sont courantes dans les médias israéliens.
Le film comprend des entrevues avec Abraham Foxman, le chef de la Ligue anti-diffamation (ADL), John J. Mearsheimer, co-auteur du best-seller du New York Times « Le lobby israélien et la politique étrangère américaine », Norman Finkelstein, un critique de la politique gouvernementale israélienne, ainsi que beaucoup d’autres. Le cinéaste suit également un groupe d’étudiants israéliens du lycée lors d’un voyage de classe en Pologne où ils visitent Auschwitz, ainsi que d’autres lieux remarquables de l’Holocauste.

Defamation ( in hebrew : השמצה ; Hashmatsa ) is a 2009 documentary film by award-winning filmmaker Yoav Shamir. It examines antisemitism and, in particular, the way perceptions of antisemitism affect Israeli and U.S. politics. Defamation won Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2009 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
The film examines whether anti-Semitic has become an all purpose label for anyone who criticizes Israel and the possibility that some Jews preoccupation with the past—i.e., the Holocaust—is preventing progress today. Shamir decided to make Defamation after a critic of an earlier film accused him of antisemitism.
Filmmaker Yoav Shamir states in the beginning of the film that as an Israeli he has never experienced antisemitism himself and wants to learn more about it since references to antisemitism in countries all over the world are common in the Israeli media.
The film includes interviews with Abraham Foxman, the head of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), John J. Mearsheimer, co-author of New York Times best seller « The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy », Norman Finkelstein, a critic of Israeli government policy, as well as many others. Defamation also follows a group of Israeli high school students on a class trip to Poland where they tour Auschwitz, as well as a number of other notable Holocaust locations.
